I don't believe it!!! :yikes: :old: Is it really 50 years since decimalisation?

I was fortunate enough not to have had any trouble converting the currency in my head but lots of people had great difficulty.

One memory I have is when approaching decimalisation we had the cash register company come and try and sell us a decimal till. Our one was similar to the one in Open All Hours - but it didn't try to bite you :heehee:

The cost of the new one was prohibitive as there was such great demand for them and I decided it wasn't necessary. I decided to convert the till myself. As we had a very limited number of prices - everything was only either ending in shillings or sixpence - there was very little that needed doing. The till didn't do any adding up and it was all calculated in our heads - remember those days when you could do mental arithmetic :blue thumb:.

All I needed to do was remove the cover and put, stickers showing the new money, over the old pop up display.

A year later the cost of a new till was 70% lower. :hapydancsmil:

The replacement for the pound note and the ten shilling note were not introduced for some time. I think it was over a year for the ten bob and about a decade for the pound - but can't remember properly.

    What are your memories?

I remember going to work that first morning of the change over and paying 5np instead of 10d and moaning about the price hike.

        You were mugged!!!

It was supposed to be 5p to 12d/shilling. :rolleyespink:

A lot of shops tried it on to start with but soon got sorted. Although they did round up anything over 19/6 to a pound.

10d was supposed to be 4p.

Hence my moan about the price hike.
I think lots of places used it as a chance to get in a price rise.

Thankfully, most of those that hiked it up too far got their fingers burnt as customers went elsewhere.

Now all that remains is adopting the metric system for real :runforhills:

I do remember seeing price hikes and being cross about that. We had a mortgage that was more than we really could afford and two -two year olds and a three year old, I worked evenings to survive financially and honestly had little think time...Converting was easy as I was good at maths, have always looked after the finances and sure suits me.. 010.JPG :)

Can you imagine the ripoffs we would have gone through if we had changed to the Euro.

I remember paying 1/6d for fish n chips pre decimal...that would have converted to seven and half new pence, but no, the prices shot up.
Good old Harold Wilson assured us that decimalisation 'will not affect the pound in your pocket' lol.

I remember it well. I was 15 and still at school. Now there's always a posh kid in the class and our one was the son of a bank manager, real leather briefcase with gold plated locks. The rest of us had duffle bags. That morning he brought in a wooden box lined with green baize and a full set of
                          decimal coins inside.

As for turning metric I think we have for certain things; can of drink = 330ml, bag of sugar =1kg,
                          on the other hand; I'm a 17-1/2 shirt, and 38w x 32leg for a pair of trousers.

The one that makes me laugh is wood, 2"x2" x 6m long.
