A couple of my onions are starting to produce flowers, they are looking quite a good size, but now this:sad:. Does this mean i need to take them out now, or can i cut the flowers off and leave them in the ground to continue growing? 1 or 2 of my garlic are also starting to produces 'scapes'. Not sure what i've done wrong, or is it this cold weather?:dunno:

    Hi Pixie,

With the onions, best use the blubs now, as the flower stem will be in the middle of it & won't keep, its hollow & tends to go moldy.

Its ok with the garlic though, when thats dried, the flower stem is the hard bit in the middle of it.

You can cut off & cook the scapes as a veg in their own right.

Thank you Ziggy. I don't mind eating onions now, it is my first year at growing them and i am happy to eat as soon as i ca. Can't wait to eat my own home grown onions:hapydancsmil:. Is there still time to plant some more onions or have a i missed the opportunity? Looking forward to the garlic, being as patient as i can.

I've still got a bucket of onion setts to get put in, having mobility problems at the moment, which is getting in the way of gardening.

The weather has only just broken though, so we're still in with a chance.

I've heard there's now 75% off onion setts at Wilkos.

Can you not walk up and down the Garden doing your Long John Silver Impression, and have willow chuck the sets in the holes behind you as you go

Not Long John Silver but Captain Cuthbert Collingwood (thought Jack would have known that one).
