I wonder if anybody can help me with something that's bugging me. As insignificant as it may seem, it's the sort of thing that keeps me awake at night.

Is the colour orange named after the fruit or is the fruit called an orange because of its colour?

Over the years I have asked my wife this question multiple times . I'm beginning to get the impression that she doesn't know the answer.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    G.

The fruit was first referred to in Middle English in the 13th Century, the colour some 300 years later. The colour is named after the fruit. Apparently originated in India as the name of the fruit.
