I read somewhere leave a bit of the stem after it's finished flowering..(possibly for the baby reason.. can't remember) So I did.. this has happened..

All normal? Delicately separate and pot on? Should I do it to my other orchid (it's finished flowering) Any other tips/info?

I'd let it form a few more roots before potting up, maybe next spring.
It is a quite normal form of natural propagation.

I love orchids but never seem to have much luck with them.

Thanks Pete and Hydro  will look up keiki.

Zilly, I only have 2 and have no idea what I'm doing to be frank! They get bare minimum water, north-ish facing window and a monthly orchid feed. Seem happy enough!

Growing them can be addictive as it seems there is always room for just one more.

Nice collection you got there. I think once I'm happy knowing the in and outs I'll get a few different types but I'll settle with phalaenopsis type for now

                  Linz / Zilly

Do continue to keep Phals as they can be some of the most beautiful flowers.

Keeping out of direct sunlight, though bright, not going much below 15c in winter and only watering once the roots turn paper white are probably the key things; letting the tepid water fully drain through the pot before return to a vase, if used.

A misting of the top of the pot helps, but avoid any spray on the buds /flowers or it will mark them.

Many supermarkets seem to be doing them for as little as £5 atm.

At tip for them is to check that apart from some bark on top of the pot, is, if the roots have been tightly packed in moss, if so carefully tease out the moss and use new bark.
They use moss as it retains moisture better, but only good for the shipping/shop period.

For a larger plant that can take the cold better / even outside in summer, consider the Cymbidium, though you will have to buy from a garden centre or specialist supplier.

A few pics below of some repeat flowering phals I used to keep.

That little yellow on was quiet something, it continued to grow its spike and new flowers just kept coming, in the end it was in flower for almost 12 months non stop, suppose it was the ideal conditions for it among those ferns etc.

My other favourite was this pink on that kept reflowering every 4 -6 months.

All the above were 'sale' out of flower plants for typically a £1 from a not too far away garden center; though they do not seem as well stocked on orchids these days.

Just getting back into growing a few phals and using this small frame in the greenhouse to grow the phals on when they finish flowering in the house; though as you can see could not resist adding a bit of colour with these little supermarket cheapies.

All it takes is a look around your local bigger supermarkets and Wilkinsons who in my area have a lot of orchids at the moment, many in more expensive presentation pots /wrapping etc, but they still have some clear pot ones at £5, either the mini types or the full size ones.

Just a case of being lucky to get there when some fresh stock has been put out.

I always take a bin bag with me so I have something to protect them when taking back to the car.
Was once in an out of town shopping center when these two young women came out with their packed trolleys with some large and expensive phals from M&S on top, but without any wrapping, so open topped to a cold frosty winters morning, but rather than put the plants in the car they stood there yapping for a good 15 mins.

Bet all the flowers had dropped before they got home , what a waste ..

The orchids I bought were reduced.. I try not to buy full price if I can help it

Ah feel your pain, when I'm hovering over the cut flowers I notice people tend to go for the ones in full bloom and I'm like, noooo go for the ones in bud!!
