    Hi,

Trying to establish if there is any difference between these three makes of polycarb greenhouses in the UK eg a 6x4 type.

Thinking about getting one more for the extra space to overwinter less hardy garden pot plants etc. so do not want to pay a lot or spend a lot of time collecting a second hand one.

Know @CanadianLori is quiet complementary of the Palram ones which do look very similar to the OutSunny ones from the web pictures, though hard to say without first hand viewing.

Also quiet a few on offer on uk stock from the China based Ebay sellers, but again not clear if they are the same as Palram or something even thinner. Some of them quote a frame thickness of just 1mm.
Also some even offer rope kits to pass over the roof to hold it down in strong winds ?!

6x4 seems exceptionally small, are you intending to heat it ? I suppose you are going to use it like an over sized cold frame, with staging.

Sorry not much help, I had to google Palram, seems to be what we used to call acrylic or perspex sheets ?

I didn't realise there were so inexpensive.
Might consider getting one myself at those prices, as long as it keeps the rain off.

Not sure I like the idea of ropes to hold the roof on if its windy.:roflol:

Outsunny seems more like a ecommerce business than a manufacturer going by their eBay presence. Palram are manufacturers specialising in polycarbonate sheeting, think they probably will be the manufacturer of the greenhouse, maybe even make them for other companies.

What I did notice about Palram and Outsunny, the difference in wind resistance. Palram is 56mph where Outsunny is 26mph.

Wind resistance of 56mph, that seems a bit low to me.

      26mph is just a breeze.

I know, neither would be any good where I am based. Depending wind direction they both could end up in the one of the lakes or the Irish sea. We have had 3 commercial tunnels destroyed due to gales. It gets that bad where we are we have erected windbreak webbing round the glass houses and polytunnels. We would need chains not ropes to keep those type of greenhouses secured.

You can see why I posted as they do seem rather flimsy, so interested if anyone else has first hand experience of them.
@CanadianLori has Palrams and she says they stand up to the winds, but there seems to be several models here cin the uk, perhaps different to hers ?

Where we were looking to place it can be supported and secured on its north and east sides.
The main use was just frost free for some taller standards etc though we could use it for toms etc in summer.

Yes, my Palrams have withstood very high winds. Part (an edge) of a tornado blew through here a couple months back and nothing budged. The polycarbonate panels have grooves along the edges and slide into channels. There are not clips or other things to come loose when the structure is rattled.

I have both 6x4 and 6x8 and manage to fit lots in there.

I am currently adding 12 gauge plastic to the inside of the panels on the bigger one to create a sort of double pane effect. I found it worked with a lighter plastic but the lighter stuff is too easy to pierce when one is playing with sharp things!
        These are mine.

The silver ones had twinwall to begin with but I didn't like the look so I switched to polycarbonate. Sorry it is getting dark so the pics are ot very good. Took me a day to put each one together with no assistance.

I'm looking at this this morning and wondering if they are sustained wind speeds, they cant be gusts surely as most places on the planet regularly get more than 56mph gusts.

I have a Palram Harmony 6x8. Had it for 4 years and have a garden which is very exposed to high winds, which we get often in most seasons. I was very worried about it withstanding the weather but it has been great. It is very well designed and has coped with heavy snow and gales which have brought down trees in neighbouring gardens. Mine is screwed onto paving slabs and is not in a sheltered spot. Couldn’t recommend enough, except that 6x8 is definitely far too small!

As you can see from my original post there seems to be at least three Palram 6x4 models being sold in the UK, don't know if its just the glazing thats different or if the frames are weaker or stronger ?? Thats before you look at the OutSunny or Ebay ones.

Seems like the Palram Harmony with its slide in bubble style glazing is the stronger type like @CanadianLori and @Irmemac have.

Seems B&Q do that model at £265 a good bit cheaper than Argos £300

These lot are reasonable, ok, the model you are looking at is a tenner more but generally they are cheaper on other models.

              - Palram - elbec garden buildings

Would be no good where we are, we would need the accessories.

Hmmm, well we are in the lower Pennines but cannot recall any recent Tornados like Lori or windier than Irmemac way up in Scotland ... plus as said we can attach it to fences / supports on two sides.

I had one of the poly/aluminium ones for a number of years. It was fairly robust against the wind - the problem was that the poly panels would be blown out of the frame - as they flex in the wind and are only held in place with a couple of metal clips. The solution was to silicone seal around each panel to hold it in place.

Make sure to get a base to hold it down - they are very light.
