Haven't tried that, Fancy, but have done logs for the fire with them. You can / could actually get machines to "roll" the logs but must admit it was fiddly so I resorted to buying kindling from the shop.

Hope all is well with you ... will have a long chat by e later or over the weekend.

It's true, Fancy, and Portugal is into recycling big time. Just up in our hamlet we even have all the recycling units ... this is where we found our babies.

We are quite horrified at the amount of foodstuffs you buy with massive packaging, styrofoam things for meat (which I often use for gardening purposes), all the boxes, the plastic water bottles (use a lot here). We are always amazed how much we have to take to the green centre several times a week.

Being computer people, we don't buy newspapers, read it on screen or have the TV on for the news.

Candi and Cal ... you've surely read about them. They are cats and we found them newly born in a plastic carrier bag in 34oC weather at the rubbish bins.

I have one of those paper potters, Fancy - but haven't used it a lot, as I rarely have newspapers either! I really ought to use MIL's ones sometimes, just take them out of the recycling bin and use them! I think they're a good idea.

If you want to make something a bit more permanent you can also use paper mixed with cement to make pots, planters etc

A google for "papercrete" will give you a few ideas ;)

I can't seem to follow the link given, but I'm wondering if these paper pots might cause the same problems as I encountered when using peat pots, i.e. they either dried out too quickly and blotted up the water in the compost as a result or, if I kept on watering them they fell to pieces before the plant was large enough to go into the ground.

    Hi Jack
It should be gardenersshop..it`s missing an "e" [IMG]

I guess if you add some hessian cloth etc into the mix it would strengthen things and last longer yet still be bio-degradable?

I use several layers they wont fall apart. another way is you place them in a seed tray with inserts. once the roots starts to develope they get hold of the paper and wont fall apart. I tried it last year and it was a great success.
