Does anybody know what the "legal" maximum age of a child is with regard to these parking places? Today I saw a mother and so called child using 1 of these designated parking places and the child looked about 18! Another mother using the spaces had a child with her of minimum I'd reckon of 12 years.
I have a sore knee atm and had to walk some distance to the supermarket as all the close parking was either designated for the disabled or mothers with children. As my daughter looks about 15 (actual age 26!) I am sorely tempted to take her with me the next time I shop and use the Mums with children spaces.

Good question Silu! You could try asking the shop managers concerned as these parking places are usually designated by them on their own ground.

Could be that some parents are going by mental rather than chronological age of their offspring

I thought they were designed for parents with lots of pushchairs etc to unload and unfold, hence the wider spacing. So that implies 5 and below. I don't think any child should be in a pushchair over that age - but then, that's another argument.

I thought they were for those with children who still hadn't been trained not to swing the door into the car in the adjacent parking space.

See I'm not the only 1 to be a bit miffed re these spaces! I will ask in store as to who is entitled and who isn't. If it is just a curtsey thing then I just might avail myself of 1 of these spaces if it's doing what it's been doing almost non stop for the last 2 odd month (raining!) and my knee is still not behaving when I next go food shopping.

I think lots of people abuse the disabled/child spaces with a lot less justification than that.

In my opinion, as an old person who struggles... People who are fit and young enough to Breed.... should be able to manage a walk to the front door of the shop....

Disabled and Parent & Child spaces are only enforceable on council or public land. If some muppet in a uniform tries to suggest there is a penalty charge due on private land, just laugh in his face

I used to work on the customer services desk in a supermarket and there is no actual hard and fast rule. People misusing the spaces could be asked to move but that is all.

It's all down to the individual driver and their personal ethics unfortunately.

I have some sympathy with young mothers who are struggling with pushchairs, buggies, babies, toddlers and shopping bags all at the same time. I agree they can walk but having extra space around the car would be very useful.

If (when) my knees start playing up I think I will use the disabled spaces in a supermarket without compunction whether I've got a badge or not. But then, I've never abused them as an able-bodied person so I'd feel entitled!

I can't stand supermarket shopping at the best of times. If I'm going to go to one then I go at a time I know it will be all but empty. Thank god for online shopping! :snork:
