    Hello Howard
I use vermiculite as a thin top layer when I surface sow seeds in a propagator .It gives a little moist airey microclimate for the seeds to germinate in.
I use perlite in my hanging baskets to make the mix free draining , vermiculite tends to get a bit soggy for this.
I probably only use one bag of each a year , bought at Wilkos for my small scale needs . It is very expensive in garden centres . If you plan on using a lot there are bulk suppliers.
You can use 100% P or V to raise plants in or combinations of both with seed compost . This video may help on its possible uses.

I use Vermiculite to cover seeds

Perlite in regular potting on - 10% perlite, 90% potting compost. The perlite holds the compost open and prevents compaction.

Perlite for cuttings - 50:50 Perlite and potting compost. Very free draining and airy for the cuttings.

Daft question is the vermiculite the same vermiculite used on open gas fires?
Often wondered if the gas fire one is treated?

Its the same as is used for insulation around lined chimneys = if that helps?

Horticultural Vermiculite and Perlite is graded for size though, and it definitely makes a difference. Hydroponic Perlite, the stuff that is cheap at Hydroponic stores :) is relatively coarse, and a finer grade is better in potting

Another major use for Vermiculite is bedding for pet reptiles and spiders etc. So if you know someone with a pet black widow spider they can give you some
