    Hi,

A few weeks ago we purchased three Surfinias from the local garden center, small plants which are now quiet bushy about the size of a fist.

With no more being readily available, thought about taking some cuttings from these plants about now to give us extra stock.

Just wanted to know if these plants readily take from cuttings ?

Was going to use the water / perlite method which worked well on our Fuchsia cuttings earilier this year, or is compost better for these more sappy cuttings ?

All surfinias are raised by cutting so yes. They are protected by the PBR ( plant breeders rights) so don't sell any are they be after your head

Thanks, did not know that, not reselling in any form.

Just need a few extra to fill our hanging baskets and that of our neighbours who nornally buy theirs ready to plant, but seems unlikely they will find any easily this year.

Bit ironic as at the begining of the year we deicided to reduce the number of seeds and cuttings as we generally end up over producing and binning loads, now the tables have been turned !

I used to take cuttings but you need to take them before any flower buds start forming.

          Plant breeders rights loop holes.
A breeder can register a no propergation rights that last for 25 years only in UK law, this is why some of the originals from this Japanese breeder have had a name change a few years back, for example, Surfinia Hot pink, became Crazy pink. The originals like Surfinia white, are no longer protected under breeders rights, so you can produce cuttings for yourself and your neighbors, however, the name Surfinia is a global registered trade mark, so you cannot sell them as Surfinia.
You can tell the difference by the wording, you will notice the word Surfinia is now followed by the (R) symbol for registered trade mark. There are some very well known Petunia and others out there that are no longer protected like Petunia Tumblelina Priscilla, even the RHS is telling people to propergate via cutting, and every major plant seller is producing it themselves and selling as Tumblelina Priscilla.
