@pete if you go into somewhere like Carphone Warehouse or Currys they will show you all the different deals on all of the networks. You will also be able to look at the phones and see what you feel comfortable with. I think that both even give you a trade in cost for your old phone and you can use that against your new phone. I did it with mine in Currys.

Ask them. I am sure they will. Alternatively if there are only a handful attach them to an email or emails and send them to yourself whilst on Wi-Fi.

There are quite a few, some I could delete, but most I'd like to keep.

You need to check your email mailbox capacity limit and maximum size of your attachments. In Yahoo I can attach up to about 15MB, maybe more. So I attach a few photos to an email. Try it. I am sure though that Currys took my photos off for me and put them on a USB stick and then put them on my new phone.

Pete, another option might be to transfer photos via bluetooth if you can get your PC to recognise the phone. You click on the bluetooth icon on your PC, select 'receive files'. Select a batch of photos on your phone and click 'share'. Your phone should then ask you where to send the photos
Click on your PC name/identity and they transfer. No cables required. It's not the fastest way but it does work
