    Hi,

When planting summer plants like begonias, lobelia, geraniums, etc. Would it alright to 1/3 or 1/2 fill pots/planters with something like polystyrene first to save on compost if pots are 25L - 70L?

    Hi,

Expect you could as most summer bedding are quiet shallow rooted, though you might have to water more often as there is less to reatain the moisture.

However we would use garden soil, gravel, stones, broken bricks etc as that will give weight to the pot as in these odd summertime strong winds the tall top heavy pots can too easily blow over.

    Hi @ricky101

Sorry for just replying. Yeah that was what I thought about the roots being shallow, but I didn't give it a thought about the weight for the wind. Its swings and roundabouts what to do for the best. Thanks for your reply.
