The smaller ones are somehow making me think of baby trout.

Thanks, the baby trout option looks promising, at least according to Google Images.

I'd say the first ones are Dace and the second one are possibly minnows.

          1) Some difficulty without being able to gauge the depth of the fish, but could be Chub, which shoal, and often feed at/near the surface.

          2) Look like Minnows (very small fish), but they live in running water like streams and rivers, not canals, but there appears to be some flow, although that could be due to lock gates being opened, although some sections of canal have feeder streams running into them.

I'd tend to agree with Scrungee regarding the 1st ones, look very much like Chub to me.
2nd ones are a little more difficult. I've looked at them a few times, could be a shoal of very young Perch looking at the striped markings on some of them?

I don't think they are Carp mate. Think they are moving a bit too quickly to be carp, and the scale pattern isn't defined enough......and Chub tend to be "slimmer" than carp because they are a river fish whereas Carp tend to be stillwater (although you can get Carp in rivers and canals).

The dorsal fins don't look right for carp.

Stillwater Dace? But I'd be happier with Chub if their heads were blunter.

I wondered about fry, there's Ruffe in that canal, what do their fry look like?

Don't know if I'm honest. In all my years of fishing I have never actually seen a Ruffe. My money is still on Chub & Perch but my Paddy Power account has never been in credit :wallbanging:
