Sad pictures today, folk as we've been having torrential rains and whirlwind gusts and a little bit of damage has been sustained, including to the Poinsettia ...

I reckon it'll perk up, we had minus 4 last night, think what that would have done to it. :D

pete, it could have coped with that ... these long stems leaning forward are SNAPPED ... the one middle top picture hanging downward with a couple of yellow leaves is completely sheared off.

In the "weather thread" I put a pic up of our weather today and mentioned that in Algoz (6kms from here) they had just cut back the Canary palms and there were these little frond chappies standing up looking skyward ... no, broken off and over as the whirlwind gales snapped them off and they look so pathetic but I know they'll grow back. Such is life ... we desperately need the rain. [IMG]

We desperately need some warmth at the moment.
Although I know strong winds are not good, lets face it, a lot of any one type of weather, is going to be a problem.

We are having torrential rains and cracking thunderstorms as I type so I may have to shut down because they are vicious here.

That's okay though as our new Satellite dish should cope with the storms and we are following the Die Hard series, 2 tonight. [IMG]

I've just read an e-mail from Sis who arrived back from Malta today and she sent me two beautiful photos of Poinsettias which I've suggested she post here. [IMG]

Lovely pics, Sis. I wouldn't think they are cut back yearly like mine. I wonder if I should trim mine less this year, say to a metre and a half, plus take out the shoots from the roots and see what happens.

Here's my poorly one today ...

I couldn't leave this with all my storm damage pictures, so managed to capture a few blooms undamaged ...

I know it's just August, but I thought I would put up a pic of my Poinsettia. Sorry, it's not a good pic because of trying to avoid the sun in the camera lens but it's the bit in the central bit of the pic between the Lantana and the Jacaranda.

I guess it's some 2.5 meters plus tall already and there's three months to go before it starts 'blooming' ....

I cut it back to about a meter in the Spring so I wonder how tall it will go this year ... I'll update from time to time.

I have also managed to keep to keep the yellow one that was given to me at Christmas by my friend and I'll include photos of it as it develops. T'other half thinks it would be interesting to plant it at the base of the red one and let them mingle .... which I just might do. :)

Thanks for the pics LoL. I still can't get over how amazing they look in their natural surroundings. I have learnt so much from posts like this one of yours. I have since read up about 'long day plants and 'short day plants' and promptly forgotten most of it !

I have also read that generally all flowers are made up of four whorls (circular rings) of bracts, petals, male organs and female organs in that order. Its just that some plants like Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherima) have big coloured bracts and small other parts. Whilst most have small bracts and big other parts. I recently purchased a Euphorbia griffithi, which is very similar with prominent orange bracts and small other parts.

This year it is nearly three meters tall which is pretty good bearing in mind I cut it back to one meter each Spring.
