Is it OK to chit my potatoes in my bedroom? They are out of direct sunlight and it does get a little warm if I keep the door shut.

Also is it OK for a few potatoes to touch (less than 1/8th of the surface) - I have tried to keep them not from touching to prevent any possible mould whilst they are in the egg cartons/plastic trays.

Also any hints/tips on the best ways to chit them?

    Many thanks,

    Samuel

You are doing fine Samuel. Try to keep them cool. I wouldn't worry at all about them touching, mine are in a big fruit box with no separation. I think the main advantage of using egg boxes is that it keeps the seed potatoes upright. I've got 60 maincrop in the box and they support each other.

They don't need to be warm Samuel as long as they are frost free that is sufficient,i just put a little wad of kitchen roll between any that are touching:dbgrtmb:

        Is temperature an issue here?

Its the best option I have in my bedroom as the greenhouse isn't in top notch (and we hae a little mouse) and the shed leaks. I have also a cold porch but not sure how cold it is!

Sounds like you're doing all the right things Samuel, just leave them alone now - the chits should start forming after a couple of weeks.

Indoors is just fine, I wouldn't put them in an unheated greenhouse as frost will get at them and if you're not sure about the porch that may get frosty too.

Depends a bit if you are going to plant them early or not. If you are going to plant them at the normal time (rather than "early" in bags or the like) then I would be careful about too much warmth - it will make the tubers use up energy, and they will shrivel. it would help if you mist them each day. If you can store them in a cooler, but frost free, room in good light - they will then "come on" more slowly and use up less energy before you get them into the ground.
