I am not a royal supporter, but to take offence at such a word as paki, is as far as i'm concerned very similar to being called a pom by an aussie, or yanks and limies.

    Perhaps starni would be better?:D

We all, have" names" in other countries, so to take offence is down right stupid.

I wonder what they call us:scratch::D

I'm Irish and have been called all sorts by the English, Paddy, Fenian (I object to that being Protestant:lollol:)-I only object if I find the person doing the name calling objectionable!:D And I've found that Aussies can be downright racist about the English. It all depends how you take it I guess.

We readily (well, I do) use the words Chav or Pikey which can be very derogatory

The words Chav and Pikey can be considered very derogatory, but no one seems to object to them being used!

His mates didn't take offence and they were the ones the comments were directed at.

The thing is its all about context, Ill admit Ive made the odd 'racist' joke in my life time and indeed probably hold a few of what some might consider racist views however I'm very careful about the company I keep when i chose to share these and i wouldn't video myself saying them!!!

I think thats the key, its how its said and not whats said.

And to get upset because someone calls you by the first part of your nationality seem a bit strange to me.
    Perhaps I'm and Engi, I dont care.:yho:
I'm not a Brit, because a far few Pakis are also Brits

As for Aussies being racist, well we better not go there,:D just very bad losers.

No, because we two sides are meant to love and embrace one another these days-and besides when I look about me I appear to have surrounded myself with the proddy dogs. And I am genuinely only joking-I know you Aaron know that already, but you have to be careful these days.

and yes I know what they say about Catholic girls......................

IMO that comment is far more racist than calling a mate 'paki' to his face.

Far more damage has been done to race relations by the News of the World publicising this than was ever done by the 'incident'.

Among my friends, we often call each other names that I would find offensive from a stranger. 'Tart' is a term of affection between mates - not when muttered by a stranger, 'Darling' or 'Dear' or some such pet name is offensive when used by a male in a patronising manner.

Local to me is an asian supermarket it's called the PAK EE shop. Owned by, run by and staffed by Asians - they weren't allowed to call it their first choice - the paki shop.

    Who is being racist there?

I'm all for being sensitive to other people's cultures and emotions but PC ness does get out of hand.

I have a friend whose parents are West Indian Muslims from Guyana. He will happily use the phrase "just off the boat" to describe Asian immigrants.

Racism is an issue, but I agree with other here, it needs to be taken in context and drop some of the PC sensitivity surrounding it. Remember when an American interviewer asked Nelson Mandela not long after his release from prison how he felt being an "African American" (all tongue in cheek!)?
