Last week a lorry took out about 10ft of our hedge. I have dug out the damaged plants, removed as many weeds as I could and planted in new privet. I want to put down a mulch to prevent weeds growing again but not sure what to use? Any suggestions what I should use please?

    Thanks,
    Paul

The old plants probably would have grown back Paul but not to worry. Any mulch will be fine but if you have some leaf mould that would work well.

    Thanks Loofah.
    Thanks for your help.
I understand what you are saying about them growing back but the company who’s lorry damaged the hedge is making the hedge good via their insurance company (it’s amazing what happens when you have cctv footage of damaged caused with the companies name written all over the sides of the vehicle! It’s quite a watch as well.......would probably make one of those ‘send in’ video shows :)) They gave me the option of contractors carrying out the work or I could do it and let them know cost. I decided to do it myself and bill them. I do not have any leaf mould so I am looking to buy something in and so I just wondered what mulch is ideal to let water through yet keep weeds at bay that I could get in a bulk bag delivery maybe?

    Thanks again for your suggestion,
    Paul

Have a bulk bag of composted manure delivered, it's useful for everything!

Agree with @Loofah, it would have been better to cut back the damaged plants as they will readily regrow.

Next door had a delivery of fencing panels but it fell off the wagon onto our golden privet, but we cut it down to below the damaged branches and by the end of the year you could not tell it had been damaged.

The catch with putting in new plants in they may stand out from the old bushes.

Do not know how long your hedge is but might be worth considering replanting it all if you want an even look ?

    Hi Ricky,

Thanks for your suggestions, much appreciated.
To be honest the hedge is about a 40ft mixture of Laurels, Blackthorn & Privet, so there is no real even look. I have thrown in a few Blackthorns and a Laurel as well so when they all grow it should look like the rest (a jumble! :)) it’s a bit of a miss match but looks the part in front of an old farmhouse.
    Thanks again,
    Paul
