Agree entirely @Mike Allen, and for everywhere in the house we do ventilate well - achieving the ventilation needed here though is nigh on impossible and it is made ten times worse by the fact it is the coldest corner of the house.

I kind of agree with Mike on this, I often get the odd damp spot on upstairs walls, always in the corners.

They are dead spots regarding air movement and that allows condensation to form, but at this time of the year often opening windows just lets more damp air inside.
Also bathrooms can create lots of damp air in the house if not got rid of in some way.
Taking the doors off will help. ;)

@Fat Controller if you rent the house perhaps you should get in touch the owners they might do something ,if you could leave the doors open a bit that will help we have trouble with our wardrobe then i kept the sliding door open a bit and last year we had triple glazed replacement windows that helped with condensation on the windows .hubby wouldn't have any windows open in cold weather .:)

Not wishing to vaunt the superiority of the French way of doing things , but all houses here have a VMC....a sort of extractor-fan system with discreet grills in the ceilings and corrugated pipes which draw stale air out through the attic. There are also flash systems which heat the air, extract the moisture and re-circulate it. Mine was installed as part of the renovation in 2008 and is still going strong :) Perhaps something for the UK to adopt?:)

I agree with the HG mould remover, I used it on a problem in my bathroom ( it does smell so open windows and vacate room.
I then repainted with a mould paint as an undercoat and used a silk emulsion on top, never returned even after 3 years.

See, now that is something that did sort of flash into my mind - - it would be fairly easy to cut a hole in the ceiling of the cupboard and put a wee extractor type fan in it to draw air out into the loft where it could disperse - - but then, that would mean running a fan pretty much all the time? I'd also have to put a vent in the wall above the doors to let air get into the cupboard...

Short term, I have the HG treatment and some anti mould paint, so that will have to do to hopefully see us through to the summer when I can get a better run at it. I also have a tiny, tiny oil filled radiator that I could sit just inside the cupboard on a very low setting during the day (it is about 300w when on full tilt) and that in turn would need the doors of the cupboard open a bit to allow the cable in.

Oh, and there is a lot of junk in there that needs to go to the tip I think, so that will be happening...... just don't tell Mrs C :heehee:

That's the incredible thing about the VMCs....they run constantly for years..and years. Don't seem to consume much leccy either. The pipe is vented to an outside wall in the attic, though. I haven't got the flash recycling kind

Maybe you wouldn't need an extractor. If a vent was put in the ceiling of the cupboard, that could well be enough to let air circulate from the loft.

If there is a lot of stuff in the cupboard that could add to the problem - not enough air circulation. :noidea:

Surely this means you are always moving warm air out of the house in winter?
So presumably you need to allow cold air in from some where.

Only warm, damp air. Specifically from kitchen and bathrooms. Presumably, with the basic type like mine, the air is replaced from somewhere. I haven't suffocated yet and there are no cold draughts :-) I suspect that nowadays, only the heat-efficient ones are fitted, which extract the moisture and send warm, dry air back into the house. Perhaps not such a good thing in view of the bugs around ;-)

Are you going to open the window for ventilation and throw things out? That's what we use to do in the middle ages :blue thumb: :old:
