I need to kill an Elder tree but it's impossible to get at the roots. It's growing between my garage wall and my boundary wall in a gap of about 250 mm and about 2 m from either end. It's getting so big that it's likely to start pushing a wall over soon, so it's got to go. I've lopped the branches off at the top of the wall which is just under 2 metres high. I would appreciate any suggestions. regards

Hi @Ossie and welcome to GC :sign0016:

There are almost certainly others who will know better than I do, but I would be inclined to hit it repeatedly with SBK Brushwood Killer (available in garden centres, or the likes of Amazon)
