I have recently planted 500m of bare root hawthorn plants. It's a double row hedge, and I'm in the process of cutting the thorns down to 3 or 4 inches from the ground to thicken it up. Is it possible to use the cuttings to propagate new thorn trees? I’ve bought some ‘propagation hormone’ but does anyone have any tips form propagating hawthorn, or has anyone had any success with this? Thanks!

I'd stick the cuttings in the ground and hope for the best but then again I hate spiky plants!

I'd say its the wrong time of the year but you have nothing to lose.
I've never grown Hawthorn but I'm thinking propagation is probably reasonably easy.

I'd go for pieces of last years growth, possibly with a heel, ie. just tear it from the older wood.
Dig a slit in the ground and push them in about 6ins, somewhere with a bit of shade and you can water them if they get dry during the summer.

I have just taken Hawthorn cuttings this morning. I cut off some of the fresh growth, cut them below a node, wiped off thorns and lowest leaves, dipped them in Hormone Rooting Compound and stuck them in a pot of 50% seed compost and 50% vermiculite. Watered them, sprayed the leaves and stood them on a heat mat in my propagating shed. I'll let wishful thinking do the rest.
