So, my big old Bramley is a *tad* out of control. I've not been able to prune it properly for a good few years now so it's mostly grown upwards! Did get a good yield this year despite that but it needs taming now.

The picture's not brilliant - there's a willow directly behind it on the golf course at the back of me - but you should get the idea. For scale, the top of the washing line post on the path to the right is roughly 6ft from the base of the tree. So the whole thing is around 16-18ft tall.

Where to begin? I am taking out the straight vertical branch in the centre of it, already started on that but I haven't planned beyond that yet. There aren't a lot of branches crossing over each other, just one or two. I'm thinking I will remove the big branch at the front which is crossed over the big one below it, as a starting point. Good move or no?

It's difficult to see the detail properly but I would be aiming at reducing the overall height and removing a lot of the inward facing thin branches. You seem to have so many of them that it can do with a lot being removed (I may be getting the branches mixed up with the willow).
