Its great for the almost luminous moths that feed on the flowers in late summer, but Clara Loo wont let me talk about them.

Sorry, JJ, for being so derogative about Privet.:cry3: A lot of my impressions of it are stamped in my mind as a kid, when you would get up close and personal to it when playing a game or hiding behind it etc. I remember the smells of it because my nose would be stuck in it as I tried to hide. It's an impression that has always stuck with me and I shudder even now when I even look at Privet.:heehee: But impressions and memories apart, it really is a hungry plant and, like Leylandii, just robs the soil around it of all nutrients and makes it very hard to find a suitable plant to plant within 4 feet of it.

This is helpful. I have a huge privet hedge boundary between the next door's garden. The hedge is huge. Derek next door's sid is immaculate. My side hasn't been touched for years. I am in demolition hedge mode & started nibbling at it but read they need to be pruned in spring. Dai reckons I could do it now. Best to wait? Mine looks nothing like JJ's Long bare straggly branches. Presume I lop them back to some sort of shape? Yuk re neighbour's antics!!

Don't apologize. If it helps I feel the the same about leylandii. The smell of that brings back memories of being a child for me, not really good ones either.

Iv`e not known privet to smell like cats pee, and believe you me, with 3 cats I know what cats pee smells like. Armandii, ALL mature shrubs drain the moisture and nutrients from the surrounding area. Not just privet and leylandii. Clematis Armandii does also.:WINK1::heehee::heehee:

Obviously, all plants take nutrients out of the ground, dai, that's what the roots are for:rolleyespink::scratch::D But some do it more that others.........and Privet is one of them!!:heehee::D But like everything in Life it all comes down to personal choice, let's face it there are gardeners who will defend Leylandii as being a worthy plant.:dunno::heehee::D

We left Armandii in the pub while we were loading up the Gardeners Corner Charabanc on a works outing.

When we went to get him out there was no moisture or nutrients in the entire building:(

You sound like Tonto, Dai, when with the Lone Ranger they were surrounded by Hostile Red Indians, The Lone Ranger says "Looks like we've had it, Tonto, we're surrounded". So Tonto looks at the Lone Ranger and says "What do you mean, We, Paleface???":heehee::D
