The Draconids are due to hit the atmosphere on october 8/9

Expect 10 meteors per hour on a clear night.

I shall keep an eye out for them...but clear nights at the moment? It's been unseasonably warm for the last week with thick cloud cover most nights :( Bit like the Perseid Shower evenings here:thmb:

Cheers though Ziggy. Maybe someone will get some good shots...

Thanks for the heads-up Ziggy. I'll have to look out my hard hat and get the camera ready.

Thanks, Ziggy. Hope the sky stays clear.

PS I think they do an ointment for draconids.

Good evening everyone, out of interest saw this today:)

    October 7, 8, 2010 Draconids
The radiant point of the Draconid meteor shower almost coincides with the head of the constellation Draco the Dragon, in the northern sky. Thatâ??s why it is best viewed from the northern hemisphere. This shower is a real oddity, in the respect that its radiant point is highest in the sky as darkness falls. The shower is definitely a sleeper, producing only a handful of languid meteors per hour in most years. But watch out if the dragon awakes! On occasion, fiery Draco has been known to spew forth hundreds â?? if not thousands â?? of meteors in a single hour. An outburt is not predicted for this year, but then, one never knows when an outburt may occur. Since the new moon will fall on October 7, weâ??re guaranteed of dark nights for observing these meteors. Unlike most meteor showers, more Draconid meteors are likely to fly in the evening than in the morning hours after midnight. Look northward for the very slow-moving Draconid meteors on the evenings of October 7 and 8..

    Hey Woo,

Thats certainly something to hope for, must be some bigger surviving lumps of the comet still orbiting then.

One day, I hope to track down a meteorite. I visually scour the eroded cliffs when I go fishing, looking for ancient impacts, no luck yet but I have found the layer of debris caused by the impact & subsequent forest fires of the comet at the end of the cretaceous period.

Its a distinct bed about 1" thick, made up from cometary dust, vapourised earth rock & the soot from a global fire.s00k

It's world wide & contains Iridium, that would only be there if the earths crust had been ruptured.

There has only been one validated report of a meteor hitting a person, it came right thru the roof & grazed the arm of someone sitting in the armchair.

    Thanks ziggy:thmb::)

    Update.
The Draconids meteor shower is active from October 6th to October 10th with the maximum occurring on October the 8th. Unfortunately the moon is only 4 days past the full so any chance of observing any meteors will be limited to an hour after sunset before moon rise. However as the maximum occurs at 17:40 BST and can occasionally produce hourly rates of 20 â?? 500 meteors it is quite possible that in that hour after sunset you may be able to observe some slow moving meteors.

Below is the night sky for October the 8th at 20:00. As you can see the radiant is high in the west.

You sure about that? (far be it for me to contradict!) but I thought the Moon was round the "Day" side of the earth at the moment?

Nah, no apology needed, but it might give you longer with your camera shot, and for the clouds to clear.
