Hi all, it looks like I have a problem with most of my roses. I've seen the problem before but not on this scale! All the buds on my roses are really hard. The ones that have managed to open are very tight and hard to the touch. Any ideas or experiences yourself?

Good morning Gazania, could be "Rose Balling" I just cut the affected ones off and wait for the new ones to form,it mainly caused by heavy rain and then the warm sun and bad air circulation,
If you think its something else please get back to me:)

Hi and thanks for the replies.

Sheal, the roses and buds in question were cut off and put into the recycle which has now gone. I'm looking closely at the new buds forming and if it happens again I'll take pics first and post.

Wiseowl, after looking around on the internet I think you are correct. As it hasn't rained here for days I hosed over the roses in the morning. An hour or two later the sun was out and blazed for most of the day. This most certainly was the cause. Lesson - only water the roses at soil level and don't hose over the the rest unless I know for sure there won't be any sun! This theory will be put into test when the next buds open.
