Hi, I'm after a rose to cover a pergola. From what I can see the difference between a climbing rose and rambling rose is that a rambling rose has more pliable stems which may be better for training over a pergola, but it seems they have a shorter flowering season and generally are less perfumed. Is this correct? I've heard there may be some climbing roses which have pliable stems so may be suitable but I don't know the type. So is anyone able to recommend a rose which is fairly fast growing, lovely flowers, good at being trained over a pergola and a lovely scent. And perhaps in yellow. As you can see, I don't have many demands! ;)
Thanks very much for sharing your wisdom.

Hi Nessa, I have three Climbing Roses climbing up the sides of my Arbour and love them being there. I would use a Climbing Rose as they are usually very pliable in their stems especially when those stems of new, green and easily trained. Rambling Roses?, well, they ramble! Having said that they can be used to grow up a Pergola.

I think that's a bit of a misconception, Nessa:dunno:, as there are such a lot of Climbing and Rambling Roses out there in different colours and flowering, that are strongly scented and repeat flowering, especially these days with so much new breeding of both types. But you can get repeat flowering Climbing Roses with lots of scent, as you can with Rambling Roses.
I could recommend such a lot of climbing Roses but Roses are, to me, such a personal choice and you're going to be growing, training and pruning, smelling the scent and admiring the flowers for such a long time, that's it's well worth doing some research and looking at the colours and types of flowers. One warning, when looking at images of Roses on the Net you might find that images next to each other of the same Rose will differ in colour!!
People will, I'm sure, recommend that you buy from David Austin and while they are among the top growers of roses, there are plenty of great commercial Rose growers who sell Shrub, Climbing and Rambling Roses which, in my opinion, are just as good if not better. I'm lucky in that I have around 8, at least, commercial Rose growers near me that will dig up the rose of your choice, pot it up for you and sell to the Public at very reasonable prices and are also ready to give the benefit of their experience and knowledge.
So, my advice, is to buy a repeat flowering, scented Climbing Rose of which there is plenty of choice and, if you can see the Rose in flower that will help you know that that is the rose for you!! I have Climbing Rose "Compassion", "Creme de la Creme", and "Alchemist" on my Arbour. Rose "Alchemist" is scented but not a repeat flowering rose. I saw it in flower draping a trellis entrance at the late great Geof Hamilton's Barnsdale gardens. fell in love with it:love30: and forgave it for not being a repeat flowering rose:heehee: I also saw Climbing Rose "Compassion" and Creme de la Creme in flower at Barnsdale and that confirmed that they were the Roses I wanted growing on my Arbour.
So, I would recommend you take your time, have a look online, get a repeat flowering, scented Climbing Rose which you will find flower throughout the year and, like mine, even into early Winter.:cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

Hi Armandii, thank you so much, excellent advice and lots for me to investigate. As always, when you read things online, it seems clear but obviously not! So I will carry on looking for a climbing rose. Thanks again

has to have a awesome scent first and foremost and thornless. I have the old fashioned one that fits that bill. Forgot how to spell it, but it starts with a "Z".

I think its spelled like Zepharinne. (close to it) a really old species dating back to 1890.

                  found it, see below---
