Roses and growing in "Acid soil"

    Hi All
    @wiseowl

    My brother has just moved house and has well established Rhododendrons and Camellias. Magnolias in the front and back garden.

    He wants to grow roses which he does not have at the moment and I dint see any in the local gardens either , so I am after advice can you cant you, if yes which ones are best , soil conditions what does he need to do ?

    Spruce, roses actually prefer an acid to neutral soil but as long as they are fed and watered will cope with all types of soil. The fact that you haven't seen any locally is not necessarily because of the soil, they do take some looking after and many people can't be bothered or haven't got the time.

    It's down to personal choice really but I have Floribunda's which are hardier than the others and suit my climate and sandy soil. :)

      Lots of ericaceous plants where I am and roses grow well :blue thumb:
