France has banned the sale of Roundup in Garden Centers due to its apparent carcinogenic properties. I bought a bottle last month to dispatch some stubborn dandelions on my pathway, and am unsure whether I should stop using it, or just regarding this story as (yet) another muddled health scare. Is anyone here going to stop using it, and if so is there a greener alternative? (I assume other brands of weed killers also contain similar nasties)

Lots of other makes contain the active ingredient (glyphosate).

This year is the first time I've used it in ages, clearing my new allotment. I could have achieved the same effect with plastic sheeting but it takes much longer. I'll be tempted to stock up on it if the ban looks like spreading here.

Thanks @Dips I gave that a go, but the little blighters kept resurrecting themselves! Maybe because the roots run along the underside of the concrete flags.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) reported glyphosate as a suspected human carcinogen earlier this year. This prompted the French response. Are the French overreacting possibly. I think the important thing is the suspected.
I would use it carefully following the manufacturers instructions, probably wearing gloves and avoiding contact with it and only when I felt it was necessary.

If they are quite well developed it will take a few applications of boiling water. Also do it when its been dry so they are more desperate for water. It doesnt work as well when they have had plenty of rain

It stands to sense if it kills plants its probably dangerous.
But how often do you use it, compared to breathing diesel fumes?;)

Thanks for all the replies. No-one seems hugely concerned which is a comfort, but I will try all other gentler methods before bringing it out again.
