    The saga continues.

My dad was recently diagnosed as diabetic. He's mostly fine, he just has to keep an eye on what he eats and measure his blood sugar regularly.

Today I told him about all the tests I was having done, so he got out his blood testing gadget and I had a go.

My blood sugar came in at 3.5. He said it should be 6, but googling it seems 3.5 is the very bottom end of the 'normal' range, and this was about 5 hours after I'd eaten a very light lunch. I felt fine though.

I'm now wondering if I've found the cause of my collapse at paintball. If my blood sugar is at the very bottom of 'normal' when I haven't exerted myself, I'm going to guess it has a tendency to drop below normal after I've exerted myself. Reading up on what happens if your blood sugar drops too low, guess what the symptoms are. Heart racing, sweating, dizziness, confusion, muscular weakness, collapse, unconsciousness among other things. Pretty much what happened to me after the paintball match, except I didn't go unconscious.

Thinking back, I remember I thought we were getting breakfast at the paintball venue, but we didn't. Being Mr Organised (sometimes) I'd had a banana just in case, my logic being if we did get breakfast, I'd have room for it on top of the nana, but if we didn't, I'd at least have the banana fuelling me. A banana is loaded with sugar, but its only about 90 kcal, which I will have burned between getting ready and then running around a field like a mentalist for several minutes:)

Today, my dad reminded me that I've always had these weird 'events' even since I was young and when I was exceptionally fit. He reminded me of one very specific incident when on a bike ride I'd suddenly become useless to the extent he had to ride behind and keeping pushing me along. We stopped at my grandad's which was on the way home. I was nearly dead until my step gran got me some sweet tea and a couple of biscuits, when I more or less instantly became my usually fit and healthy self, ready to tackle the last 12 miles to get home, which I did without any further bother.

This gets me to wondering, I'm not starving myself, and if I inadvertently am now, I certainly wasn't then, so maybe something just isn't working right in me and never has. I guess its just a case of waiting to see what the blood test results show when they come back, but I'm sort of less worried now than I was. If its something that's always been going on with me, as opposed to a new thing, then its probably nothing I can't deal with just by managing my diet a bit better.

It seems to me as though a good precaution would be to carry a packet of something like Kendal Mint Cake (I really don't like the stuff ) as it will give you an immediate hit of sugar.

Sorry if that brings up a hint of the War of the Roses! :heehee:

What you describe sounds like a hypo: http://www.diabetes.org.uk/Guide-to-diabetes/Complications/Hypos-Hypers/ I'm a First Aider in a busy office and it's very common, usually when people skip lunch and get stressed working towards a deadline. Most folk realise their own condition and will often have a drawer full of chocolate or sweeties. Different people react differently and can get confused, so even when they have had an episode before they can't think straight as to what to do. I've had it since being a teenager. I always get plenty of warning, feeling weak and shaky as though I'm walking through treacle. A sugary drink always works for me within a few seconds.

Well, I got my blood test results back today. Apparently there is nowt wrong with me, which is good, but a bit confusing seeing as I didn't imagine collapsing after paintball last year, and I don't think I'm imagining my chest and throat lurgy that is currently going for a record, at over 4 weeks since I was last right.

Really pleased all the tests proved good Clueless:dbgrtmb:.....though it doesn't explain the reason for your collapse last year but maybe you just over exerted yourself and i think your body has a way to stop you before pushing yourself too far:dbgrtmb:

As for your chest and throat lurgy.....tell me about it:doh:i'm on my second bout of proper lurgy in a few weeks and i'm having a right job shaking it off:gaah:....there seems to be a few folks having the same trouble:dunno:

Surely a blood test only shows up certain things, true they are often serious things.
So its good to know the blood tests are OK.

The chest and throat thing is probably a winter problem, brought on by office conditions, perhaps, you know kind of hot, stuffy, no fresh air all day, everyone breathing the same air, a bit like being on a plane, permanently.
                Just guessing.

The collapsing after paintball, just out of condition, probably?:rofllol:
                Its for youngsters.;)

Not our office. We're in a building so old that even the floors are wonky. Single glazed, drafts, and that's with the windows closed. Its lovely fresh air in our office.

Clueless the lurgy you have is nation wide. I had it last year and it took a month for it to start clearing up. My other half has had it now for over three weeks and it still shows no sign of going. It starts to clear up and then makes a comeback. :doh:Glad to hear your tests were okay. :)

That's what mine keeps doing. I'll be nearly, but not quite, right for a day, then on death's doorstep the following day or that night.

It will go eventually Clueless. When I had it I stopped taking medicine after the third week and let my immune system take over the fight and burn it out. Sometimes I think medicine doesn't help, it just delays what the body's natural defences can and want to do. It was gone in a further week. :)

Supposed to be an old wives tale but, with all this wet and warmish weather, we need a cold spell to kill all the germs.
