We just started to get a problem, Security Shield keeps popping up every minute or so telling us we are unprotected and have harmful viruses/malware, is this a known virus/Trojan? I thought not as it stems from (microsoft??) Security Shield on the taskbar. We are 'under threat/ systemcrash/open to hacking etc etc but to clear it pay $95, it does seem to be a virus although F prot anti virus and Spybot haven'y detected it!

Oh, god, I had that last year. It hides itself in a couple of locations. You'll have to go into the control panel, find where its hiding & delete it from there.

Its a pain in the bottom & the avg type stuff don't pick it up.

That is a virus....you wouldn't get a message like that from Microsoft asking you to pay. It sounds like one of those ransom virus's. Have you got the Malwarebytes anti-malware program as I read in the Computer Active Magazine that it is able to detect and delete those particular types of malware.:snork:

Security Shield Bug - how to fix it:

Google 'bleepingcomputer.com + security shield removal' and there's 2 different bits of software to download as you need the first one to stop the thing from working to then delete it. You may need to download them using another computer onto a memory stick as Security Shield Bug will probably stop you from doing it on the infected one.

I'll have a go in the morning, haven't had time yet. Can't do the memory stick method as we only have the one computer.

Although I posted a link on how to remove it, i'm pretty sure I did it by just finding where it had stuck itself. I seem to recall it did things to avoid being deleted.

Can't download anything, ie spyhunter and wouldn't know where the virus is hidden.

Oh bother, go into computer control panel & find uninstall program. Find the little darling in there, right click & delete, then clear your recycle bin straight away.

by uninstall do you mean add/remove programs? as it is on my windows xp coz it's not there and it does seem a too obvious place for a virus so I still don't know where to look.

Strangely Ziggy, this morning it hasn't appeared at all although I guess that doesn't mean it has disappeared completely.

No, that might be even more ominous. I wonder if you did a system restore to an earlier point in time that might get rid of it. Have you got your pics backed up elsewhere?

A friend of mine had a similar problem last year. Luckily for him his wife had a separate account to him on their computer, so while the malware was on his account it wasn't on his wife's. They were able to get rid of the problem by using his wife's account to download the ant-malware program. I learnt from that and now how two accounts on my computer. I use Bullguard as the primary security system, with Spotbot, Spy Doctor, Malwarebyte, being used two or three times a week just in case.
