    Now I've finished building the hot bench I can't wait to use it. I'd welcome suggestions of anything to sow now - vegetables, flowers, anything really. I already have cabbage Hispi lined up....
    :ThankYou: In anticipation :biggrin:

      Thanks Dips they sound good. The broad beans are already popping up outside, like the idea of globe artichokes and verbena. Sweet peas are in the cold frame as they like a bit of a chill I think

            Hi Philomel
            I always sow my sweetpeas indoors on a windowsill . Some have just germinated this morning after 7 days. When they get to about 50mm high I move them out to the GH , as you say they prefer it a bit cool.
            My first seeds on the prop will be in one or two weeks time . Phlox moody blues , Laurentia 'star flower' , and Salvia .

              Thanks Harry that's great! I've just taken them out of the pods and will get them soaking. :yes:
              It's a variety that was growing here when I arrived. They self seed into the border they're in but I'd like to get more around the garden. I think they might be an old variety, they certainly have a strong scent and are two tone dark burgundy.
              I think I might try starting one or two other things now. Our last frost date is a couple of weeks earlier than Kent where I used to garden, so :fingers crossed:
              I'm interested you're zone is 8B+. I think I'm 8A, but although it gets cold in winter here the sun is so much stronger in the summer, so some things thrive that wouldn't in the uk. Eg lotus and also I can grow Chimonthus in the open not just in a protected spot. We have peaches and figs etc too which produce very good crops. So it's a less even, more extreme climate I suppose
              Love your dog :wub2::doggieshmooze: :)

                      Had my first sowing session, but :eeew: Little black beetles had eaten lots of my sweet peas grrrrr. It took ages to pick them over, but I did find enough to sow hopefully :fingers crossed:
                      Also sowed Hispi cabbage, Romanesco, Nemesia, early purple sprouting, lovage, basil and coriander. An experiment with some, but I've just sown small quantities, you never know til you try ;)
                      I need to go and get seed of some of the other things suggested above, but at least it's a start :yes:

                          Quick update :)
                          All the sweet peas have germinated which was a surprise after the beetle discovery :yes:
                          They're now in the cold frame.
                          Today I potted on the Hispi and the romanesco into peat pots. They'll go in the cold frame soon too. Also germinated are early purple sprouting, cabbage Golden Acre, Lovage and oodles of Nicotiana oh and perennial stocks, a favourite flower for their beautiful scent. A few others are sulking, but some was old seed, so I'll have space for more sowing soon :hapfeet:
