Does anyone here have a Shih-Tzu? My husband & I are looking for our first ever dog (we have a cat) and have seen a 4 year old bitch up for rehoming, only a handful of miles away. Online research shows them to be great little dogs, and this one apparently likes cats, dogs and children. Are they as good a breed as they sound, and, as a first-time dog owner, would it be a good start for us? Thanks :)

I quite like shih tzu, they are friendly but in a more contained way than other dogs of the same size.

Thank you :) I'd read that they are, but it's always good to get someone's opinion as well :)

A friend had one & he was very cute lovable & well behaved little dog.. I think it would be a good starter dog for you, there is a lot of daily grooming but if that doesn't bother you then go for it.
I have rehomed many dogs over the years & although it takes them a while to settle in, with love & affection you will win out.. You must post us a pic..

well im the same as @Val.. it's the Bichon i fell for  not overly dissimilar breeds though especially where coat care is concerned (you realise as well as regular brushing she'll also need to have her coat clipped every few months) they were a regular in the Groomers i used to work in so i got to meet quite a few & they were all lovely friendly little dogs...not to mention adorable :imphrt: always reminded me of Gizmo from The Gremlins :heehee:

I also had that feeling that they remind me of the Gremlins. Surelly children are bound to like that characteristic.

I'm going to view a Shih Tzu x Jack Russell today. The Shih Tzu bitch has been homed... He's apparently a really friendly, cat-friendly fella and he's really cute in the photos :)
