As far as I know they thrive in the shade, I have seen them used deep inside offices where there is no natural light.

I keep mine well shaded, but casting my mind back I think the one that flowered for me spent the winter on a west facing window cill behind frosted glass.

They are in fairly small pots for their size and their roots are trying to burst out. Maybe this root constriction triggers flowering similar to Agapanthus.

Close up of one as promised:

My sansevieria (snake plant) has also decided to bloom. I hadn't noticed, but caught the fragrance last night when closing the curtains, it smells similar to a lily. It has sticky globs of nectar.

Glad to see the Amaryllis I sent you has flowered! It's a colour I particularly like as well! Besides it has a little story behind it! It is in fact a hybrid I produced!

As I used to write on another gardening forum, which shut down a few years ago, I used to write about my Amaryllis plants & post photos of them in bloom, like we do on here. Well a lady member from the USA liked them very much & to my immense surprise sent me some pollen from her Amaryllis that were flowering at the same time as mine. I'd never heard of anyone sending pollen, of any plant, through the post & she didn't warn me either!

So getting hold of a small children's paintbrush I put a little pollen on the flowers, after removing the pollen producing anthers first & before they opened, this lady sent me & a few of the flowers were fertilized & a few went on the produce seeds. I then planted some seeds in a little compost & a few days later they germinated! :)

But then I had to wait 4 years before seeing the results of my crossing. The very first plant to flower was this colour, a cherry red which I loved as soon as I saw it open! In fact it was the only one of about 20 seedlings that reached flowering size of this colour! :)

So there you have the story behind your Amaryllis bulb, @Michael Hewett!

To differentiate between my normal Dutch hybrids & these I called the 20 bulbs "Anglo-American hybrids"! After all they were a mix between my own seed grown bulbs & these American Amaryllis.

I had no idea that Mothers-in-law tongue produced flowers like that! I had heard they can sometimes flower but that they produced brownish-blue flowers at the base of the plants! Never having seen one flower nor having ever grown one myself I had no reason not to believe that story!

That's a great story @Balc. I particularly like the idea of sending pollen through the post, I would have guessed it lost it's viability pretty quickly, so good to know that it doesn't. I find it amazing what you have done on a balcony.

On mine the the nectar globules looked like little lights illuminated by the window behind, quite magical. I have another one in flower now.

That's a great story about the pollen @Balc I'm pleased to have one of the Anglo-American hybrids. I hope it flowers again next year.

Nice to see the Rhipsalis has produced some berries :dbgrtmb:

That sounds like an Aspidistra flower, I have some that have produced flowers in the past but have since died back a bit so haven't produced any for a few years.
