Can anyone tell me what this is?? It was planted before we moved in and it looks like they’ve planted it far too close to upload_2020-7-31_10-1-47.jpeg

@Emily Jones The big central green stem looks like an Ash to me. Are the darker stems around it, that appear to have been pruned, part of the same plant? The leaves look different. A clearer photo would help.

Looks like two different plants, as Nigel said.
Closer pictures of leaves and stems will be required I think as neither seem to have any real distinctive things about them.

Id say the red stem is dog wood, and the other one is some kind of ash.

Thank you for the further pictures I think Pete is spot on. I would remove the ash asap dig it out if at all possible otherwise cut it off as below ground as you can get and be prepared for it to come back next year. The alternative would be to treat it with glyphosate, you can get it in a gel and smear this on the leaves.
As for the Cornus, the commonest types are grown for the colour of the stems in winter, this is strongest in the youngest shoots so people prune them in spring and remove a third to a half of the shoots right at the base and it should resprout and form long coloured stems for the winter. Give it a feed after pruning they also tend to prefer damper soils to grow really well.

The red stem one is the Cornus... a shrub
            See your pics above.
Probably Cornus alba siberica....white flower/white berries.

Other one looks like an Ash...a tree.
            Recommend you remove asap.
Not a tree for a small garden.
