Hi everyone, I've never been a big fan of social media (probably never will be,) but I've seen the benefits of Facebook this week, my son (41 with mental health problems) went missing from the facility he was in, my daughter posted a message on Facebook and within a few hours he had been spotted and taken back safe and sound.

Thank goodness he was found so quickly mazambo, it does have its uses. Our local Facebook page has people recycling things they no longer want which must be a good thing to cut down waste. I also follow a couple of groups who post pictures and memories of past places I've lived and worked in.

Must admit I was sceptical of Facebook for years, but since I joined I've found it does have it's uses.

It's really about making it work for you and not to get too wrapped up in it .

              Good news indeed !

Like @mazambo , we've never dared use Facebook , though know sometimes its the only way to contact sellers/suppliers when they cannot be reached by phone or email.

Any pearls of wisdom on how to use and stay safe on FB if we joined , we would never put our real details up there like DoB or address etc.

You don't have to give your real name if you don't want to.
The thing is once you start connecting with friends they then start to slowly work things out about you.
But most of it is out there any way.

I have joined facebook only in the past month, having been really wary of it for years - - since joining, I have connected with quite a few old friends who have moved away or we have simply lost touch over the years. Don't think I will use it an awful lot, but it is clear that there are some benefits to it

I had joined some time back. Before I had put anything on there, I received a few nasty messages from unknown members.
I had emailed Prof. Brian Cox, c/o The BBC as I had no personal email ID for him. Good old Beeb via some member, put the email on Facebook. So I left.

Not really 'OUR' scene is it?

I just can't understand politicians and country leaders getting hooked on such as twitter.

You need to come at it from another angle, Mike. The Politicians and Country Leaders aren't hooked on such as Twitter, but they know that their base/fans/sycophants are so they use it as a Pulpit to preach to the converted.:dunno::doh:

I don't do Facebook or Twitter but Mrs Shiney has Facebook. She finds it good and bad. :noidea: Apparently (not sure about this) you can limit who can look on your site (closed group?).

She uses it for her flower clubs and a limited number of friends/family and finds it handy but ignores a lot of inane comments that some make.

For what's going on locally and what's being offered free, or cheaply, she uses the local 'Nextdoor' group. That's handy for getting, or getting rid of, things. A couple of years ago someone wanted to get rid of 50 x 2ft square paving stones just when we wanted something like that. Less than 2 miles away and freebies. It has also been good for finding local tradesmen. We've needed quite a few in the last couple of years as most of those we knew have either retired or died . You get people's personal experiences of them so get a good idea. We tell them we saw them on 'Nextdoor' which helps as they know that if they do a bad job it will be put on there.
