our local farmer normally does good crop rotation between wheat, potatoes, sugar beet, maize and winter barley, with the odd winter mustard green manure thrown in. But there is something new out there this year. Any ideas?

Looks like Linseed to me or also known as Flax/Common Flax (Linum usitatissimum:smile:)

Very nice plant and your blue flowers should open out more than they have in your photo.I assume they will either be harvested for the seeds or the oil:smile:

We first came across fields of it on the Isle Of Wight in the 90's and sometimes come across it here on the mainland but haven't seen it for a few years so it must be one of those fad plantings:snorky:

Ahhh, I wondered if it was linseed!

Yes, the flowers have only just started to appear, within the past few days.

Yes it's linseed. In a week or so it will be a sea of gorgeous blue.
