I've just sat and gone through my seed box to try and work out a clearer plan for this year (last year was somewhat hit and hope, and a lot of things were sown too early I think).

Anyway, I have attached my plan as it stands so far, however as always I would appreciate the input of fellow GC'ers as to whether my timings are right etc?

Also, am I alone in having this scary amount of seeds?

        Thanks :)

I still need to add my chillies and peppers, and maybe some different lettuce types, maybe leeks, onions (better get my skates on with them if I am going to do it this year).

Fingers crossed that the weather behaves for us all this year.

The lobelia seeds sound like caster sugar when I give the packet a shake, so they must be miniscule, and the night scented stock must be similar as the quantities stated are simply one pack of each.

I reckon that there will surely be a fairly high failure rate with that many seeds being put in a packet?

PS - have another glass of that Pinot Grigio, its not done its job properly if it hasn't made it to your feet!

Very nice plan FC , a good selection of flowers and veg . I separate my flowering plants , corms / rhizomes and veg onto separate sheets and put them in date order makes it a tad easier to follow. I have attached part of my plant plan as an example.
Growing petunias in a GH mid Feb may be a touch early , I usually start mine first half of March on an indoor prop. I see you are growing onion Ishikura , I am trying them this year. On the question of how many types to plant , well I get down to line 43 on my plan and thats more than enough for me ( 36 items )

:wow: Temperatures, costs and everything - I am impressed!

EDIT - I tried the Ishikura last year, and it was pretty dismal, however so was just about everything else including lettuce and radishes thanks to the weather.

Looks like a good plan fc. The only comment I have would be to delay sowing the cucumber seed to early April.

You don't need to sow all the seeds in each packet, so if you get 1000 lobelia seeds, try and sow a small amount from the pack (they will keep till next year), unless you really do want that many plants. It's tricky with small seed that looks like pepper dust, I mix them in with some dry silver sand so I can spread them evenly on the compost surface.

Regarding the number of seeds, I over-stretched myself last year, I grew 175 different varieties of seeds and bulbs plus about 8 packs of plug plants. This includes about 61 different vegetable varieties mostly from seed. I am only growing about half that number this year (but still the same number of veggies). I think I am only average, I bet there will be people on here that grow double that amount, but for me it was taking up too much time and space.

Changed it to the first week in April for the cucumber - thanks John :)

I do want quite a lot of lobelia for my baskets and pots, although I wouldn't want 1000 - however, I was working on a probable success rate of around 25-30%, so 250-300 viable plants?

Any that I don't use will be distributed to neighbours and friends anyway, so none will be wasted if I really get lucky with them.

I like the silver sand idea.

I did wonder about putting them in an old pepper pot or something to assist in sprinkling onto the compost?

You would need to clean the pepper pot each time to make sure you didn't get them mixed up, but if it works for you then give it a go. It's all about finding your own ways of working.

                            Well done on being organised!
I tend to rely on gut instinct and previous experience. Owing to the sheer number this year I've decided to do a sheet to keep a record though.
