I'm a bit confused about when to sow some things like Kale, carrots, early potatoes and peas outside without a cloche.
Lots of the instructions say to start in March when the weather and ground warms up. It's not hugely warmed up, but in the day time it does seem to be steadily at 10ish C at the moment.
But is it better to still hold off until nearer April because of frosts?

I always get confused at this time of year about what needs protection and what doesn't. E.g. last year I was bringing my Dahlias inside every night even though there were no frosts, but just because the temps were dropping to 1 - 2 C which I thought would kill them (doh)

    Thanks :D

Depends on your soil - heavy clay it's too early. If you have a decent loam then Kale and carrots you could sow now and they don't mind a bit of frost Early potatoes - just be prepared to earth them up or cover with fleece in case of frost.

Dahlias: I wouldn't risk if it goes down to 1 or 2C on a thermometer (or the BBC forecast) - as the actual ground at soil level can still freeze on a clear night.

The old farmers method is to drop your trousers and sit on the ground.

If it sends a shiver up your doobrie then the soil's still too cold :heehee:

Where is your location Victor? Here in surrey it's too cold to get succesful sowing outdoors, I'm currently sowing indoors then transplanting to my greenhouse - but a cold frame would just about work if you're milder than me.

Assuming you're talking about annual leaf spinach?
