Hi, I'm a new user on this site, and am enjoying the chat and learning what facilities are on offer.

I do have a problem, however, and I'm not sure if it's me, my computer, or the site. The amount of time that it takes to display a new screen seems to be very long, when compared to other sites I have visited. At times there can be a delay of 15 seconds or more when waiting for the screen to change. Other times it happens quickly. I connect to the internet using ADSL, so I don't think its my line speed.

Is this sort of response time normal with your site?

Are there any tips you could give me to help speed up the system, maybe some parameter change to my browser, which is IE 5.5, running on Windows ME?

PS This is not me, Lady of Leisure, wording this ... I'm a techniphobe big time ... it's my computer pro other half!

This isn't normal. I have broadband but a ver old computer and my screens change in less than a second. I am running IE 5.5 but on a Mac. Is it anything to to with cookies? Check FAQ. {Not a computer expert, sorry!]

Thanks, Liz. I just took me ages to get back into this and the technophobe is at it again ... I've did this reply to you and then lost it!

My other half really is a computer pro ... earned a living at it for over 20 years and he can't figure it out. Maybe the Webmaster can shed some light on this dim subject.

I see that you're having as good weather as us so hope you have a good weekend - gardening perhaps? - and enjoy it ... it probably won't last as long as mine!

    Tchau!

I haven't had a problem with speed the last couple of days. I use IE 6, and XP Pro and broadband - so methinks you got a gremlin.

The weather here today - we could be in Portugal, hot with a slight breeze. Ihope you hubby can fix the problem - could time for a clean up - or perhaps and increase in memory.

Hi, Fran, and thanks for your input.

T'other half and I are on a network. He's tried on his computer which has more processing power and memory than mine with the same results. He's "tweeked" some things but no joy there either.

It seems okay moving around a topic, it's going in and out of forums, sending replies and even logging in / out ... so even more puzzling!

    Have a good weekend!

    Hi, folks, it's me again!

Forgot to say that both "my husband and I" (don't you hate saying that phrase without thinking of someone in particular?)use other Bulletin Boards and don't have this problem on any of them nor with any other programs we use.

    I (im)patiently await a solution.

    Thanks.

    LoL,

I cannot figure out why this should be, as you say you use other forums and don't have a problem ??

All I would have suggested was a test online to check your upload/download speeds, but as said above, if you are using other forums, you would notice a difference.

Apart from that, I wouldn't know what to suggest.

Personally, I use Broadband on Windows XP and Wireless and I have fantastic refresh speeds.

You could always contact my host http://www.titanhosts.net/ , they may be able to shed some light on it for you .

Hate to mention it, but I too find moving around the forum very slow. I am on broadband and have no problems on other sites. Gardeners Corner is a fantastic place and I'm not moaning at all, but the truth is that I would use it more if I didn't have to wait so long between pages. So I go to the live topics page, scan down the intros and click on those that look particularly interesting. Unfortunatly that means I never browse any of the posts in many of the categories. :(

I assumed it was my aging computer at fault and as I am getting a new one next week, I hope all will be resolved.

    Many thanks for GC! [IMG]

PS - after posting the above, it took 35 seconds for it to appear on screen.

No problems at all with the speed of GC here. Refresh speed is almost instant - just two or three seconds.

Here's a link to a speed test. It may be of little use though as your problem seems to be specific to the GC site.

I am finding it slow these days and I am on broadband as well. Recently my computer often locks up (only on GC), I am assuming it's timing out in some way?

So have to agree with you Lady of Leisure, mine is typically about 15 seconds or more.

Hmmmmmm, interesting to know, no doubt if I report it to Titan , they will blame it on your pc's  .

DAG, ir would be interesting to see if there is any difference when you get your new computer, please let me know how it is then.

I sometimes have slow refresh speeds, but that is due to my internet provider, and it is slow on all boards and sites.

    Good afternoon, folk!

After more "tweaking" and other "testing" the speed is still not up to speed, ha, ha! It's particularly bad now.

I'm not having problems anywhere else ... maybe everyone has come out of the Sunday afternoon doldrums and has gone on line ???

L Of L - Who is your ISP?

It would be interesting to see if you and the few others who are experiencing the same problems are using the the same ISP.

I very much doubt if there is a problem with the GC ISP's web-server as the traffic in this site is quite light compared with many others and the majority of users do not seem to be experiencing the same delays.

You mentioned that you and hubby have tried with two PCs and have had the same results. The only things your PCs have in common is the Firewall (assuming you have one) and your ISP. Your Firewall is unlikely to slow things - it says either yea or neigh however your ISP's DNS (the thing that decodes internet addresses) might be playing silly beggars with some addresses.

Just a thought and may be barking up
    the wrong tree.
