spent mushroom compost

    ive decided horse manure is too messy and i dont have enough space to store it until all the antibiotics disappear. so im going to use mushroom compost on the allotment this year any tips please?

    Hi Aster, and welcome. As with any manure/ compost there are two ideal ways of using them, either spread it on the ground as soon as you`ve finished the winter digging,this will allow the worms time to take it into the soil for you. Or you can use it as a mulch in summer. You say horse manure is too messy I assume you are talking about fresh manure? You shouldn`t use fresh manure anyway, it will cause more harm than good. However, if you get well rotted manure that is more like compost than manure and I doubt if there are antibiotics in it. By the way, spent mushroom compost is actually manure anyway.

    I got a load of spent muchroom compost a few years ago and used it mixed with growbag compost for my greenhouse toms and in the outdoor bed where I grow toms. Outdoors I just dug it in in early spring. I got nice toms and a bonus crop of mushrooms!
