My dear island has been battered over the last couple of months with high winds and rain and its taking it's toll, things are starting to get desperate now.

The island obviously has to rely on shipping to bring in our vital supplies, but last week and this week Tesco's alone looked like it had been raided.
Food shelves are almost empty. Last week there was no fruit and veg, no bread, and meat supplies low. Even though the island produces a certain amount of this here it is not enough to supply the 80,000 population.

Having said this there hasn't been a toilet roll in sight for two weeks. Hmmmm.......looks like the Phone book will have to be commisssioned!:heehee:

Holy mackerel, I didn't realise IoM was so vulnerable these days. I know that stretch of sea can get a bit choppy but I'd just assumed that modern ships could sail in pretty much all conditions.

Slightly off topic, I was once on board a ferry when a storm came from nowhere, and things got so bad that we were all actually called to the emergency assembly points "as a routine precaution" (never been called to them before or since, so not that routine). All other crossings were cancelled that day, but we were already half way across so had no option but to persevere. I've never been so pleased to stand on french soil.

We have modern ships Clueless, but the steampacket here has only one ship for passengers and freight and two sea cats, they won't fork out for any more. The sea-cats can't sail this time of year, they would be tossed around like paper planes, so that leaves us with just the one!

I heard about your problems on the wireless earlier Sheal, not good at all.

Chiltern Seed Catalogue has got the softest paper.

Running out of Flour is not good.

All seaweeds are edible, best stewed up with some oats & seasoning if you've got some.

They don't say anything Miraflores. They are used to it and there's nothing they can do anyway. They did put a sign up inside the shop last week apologising for the lack of supplies.

This is a normal occurence during the winter months. But it's not been this bad before. The weather has been particularly bad this autumn and winter.

Ziggy, I've got a Suttons catalogue, but that as yet hasn't been tried and tested. :loll:

To make matters worse, our one and only ship, the 'Ben-my-Chree' has had a bow thruster out for a few months now and was 'holed' trying to dock at Heysham last week in strong winds.

She's being taken out of commission next week to get it replaced, I think we'll be left with a coracle and a couple of oars. :heehee: It's going to be a tight squeeze getting the containers in there!

It's actually being replaced temporarily with an old ship which used to belong to the steampacket and a hired in freight ship. Think I'd rather take my chances in the coracle! :)

Don't worry, Sheal, we'll all contribute to send you food parcels by helicopter :dbgrtmb:

Back in my younger days we always used torn up telephone books, on a wire hook, as they worked better than toilet paper. I was accused of being posh because we had a telephone :heehee: (my dad needed it for his work).

I also remember the days of what we called 'government issue' Izal it was then. It had to be screwed up into a ball and flattened out before you could use it. Great for tracing though! :heehee:
