The Met Office issued its second red weather warning in less than two days covering a large area between south-west England and Wales.

Britain is on red alert for what now threatens to be the most dangerous snowstorm to hit the nation in three decades.

UK to suffer 'SIGNIFICANT travel disruptions' from more snow

Power cuts, villages getting cut off: those kinds of things are expected to happen

    Louise Lear

Storm Emma will spew almost 12 straight hours of blizzards, torrential snowfall and violent 70mph gales across England through tonight.

Mr Deakin continued: "It’s going to be pretty horrible through tonight and tomorrow morning across this zone.

"Elsewhere overnight tonight there will be more snow showers piling in across the north and the east but the snow may extend further into parts of south-east England too, covering here with a few more centimetres. It is again going to be a very very cold night with temperatures widely below freezing."

The Met Office said up to two feet of snow could fall across parts of southern England before Emma departs late tomorrow morning.

It is likely to be the most severe whiteout to affect parts of the country since the mammoth snowstorm of 1991.

The storm will hit on the first day of the meteorological spring with today shaping up to be the coldest start to spring ever.

The lowest temperature for March 1 is -20C (-4F) recorded in the Highlands of Scotland in 1986 as temperatures prepare to dip to -15C (5F) tonight.

With wind-chill whipped up by Storm Emma, it could feel close to -20C (-4F) tonight in northern Scotland.

Almost 4,000 gritters with ploughs have been sent out to clear roads of ice and thick snow. The RAC Foundation said around 500 snow ploughs have been put on standby ahead of severe falls later this week.

The Army is on standby to help local councils clear deep snow and clear the roads should they request although as yet this has not happened.

Strong winds will whip up snowdrifts several feet deep which threaten to leave swathes of the country buried until mid-March.

Storm Emma will spew almost 12 straight hours of blizzards, torrential snowfall and violent 70mph gales across England through tonight.

Britons have been warned to stay home and avoid all but essential travel from later this afternoon and into tomorrow with two feet of snow forecast.

As freezing easterly winds blow in from Siberia, the storm, laden with moisture from the sea will smash the western side of the UK.

It is likely to be the most severe whiteout to affect parts of the country since the mammoth snowstorm of 1991.

That much snow will cut people off for days. We ve been stuck for 3 so far. May i suggest people fill flasks with hot water, find those candles and torches now. Regions getting hit by this snow dump will have power cuts i fear. Goodluck.

Keep warm, stay indoors, run round in circles screaming!!! :yikes: The running round in circles won't help much but it will keep you warmer. :)

I remember the winter of 1963. It lasted from early December until early March

Although this cold and snowy spell is bad, and likely to get worse, I think that the media spread fear and despondency instead of calm and good advice.

I’ve certainly seen a lot more snow, in the recent past, but the roads around here are treacherous!

Easter 2013. The main A road that past through the village I was living in on the Isle of Man. My village had to be dug out having drifts between 10 and 20ft in places.
