I have a few strawberry plants in pots and they are producing long runners. Is it ok to chop these off? They're obviously not going to be able to sucker into the decking and I don't want them taking root in adjacant containers.

If you chop them off then all the strawberry juice runs out and the sky falls in.:ouch1:

(It's fine, but you can also pot them up for more strawberry plants next year)

I think best (for the energy of the plant) to only let one plant produce a couple of runners - you can root them into 9cm pots stood nearby. If you don't need the runners then chopping them off will save all the energy :)

Me too :) I bend a short piece of wire in half, and "peg" the runner into the pot - to stop it running away :heehee:

This comes up every year - I just lop them off and plonk them in a pot or in the ground and they're alwys fine

As I grow my strawberries through Mypex it's essential to have pots of compost for them to root in.

Absolutely essential if attempting to keep things tidy and keep the pots (as above) in pot trays (I use 6x packs) and bending runners to tether plantlets in adjacent pots.

I've always let every single runner grow and saved the lot. It may reduce cropping, but you have loads of extra plants which more than compensates.

And finally, how to save (7 per plant each year) and sell your runners to become a millionaire in 10 years!

I'm now off to water my 330 strawberry plants .......

Slightly overlooking the 25 hectares you need, assuming they need 1 sq.ft each (including paths etc.) , for the 2,730,293 retained plants in 2024!

Upside: I paid 95p each for my Strawberry plants, so you can stop in 2023 by which time you'd only need 1.5 hectares :)

I only have 0.75 acre (0.30 hectare), but only 1/8th of those plants would be in the ground @ 11/m2, and the other 7/8 would be in 18x 70mm pot trays @ 113/m2 which after deducting for circulation space would be around 1oo/m2, so the max space I'd need in the final year would be 55,000 m2, so I might be limited to achieving only £100,000 with the land I already have.

At least that'll take a bit of pressure off Sunday morning car booting sales.

Ah, that clearly raises another problem. The maximum number of plants you can convey to a car boot sale and/or the maximum number you can sell [locally] at that Car Boot Sale is X.

Therefore you need to visit 2,730,293 / X car boot sales - at increasingly more distant locations ...

Assuming you can get 1,000 strawberry plants in your car's boot??, and sell that many "locally" at each car boot sale??, you need to visit 7.5 car boot sales a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to flog them all :heehee:

                  Oooookaaaay

I've never even been to a car boot sale, never mind sold produce at it so I just cut off the runners and stuck what looked like rootable bits into another pot. Will wait and see if I've done it properly. Sorry if it comes up every year, I'll learn to use the search function better in future. Sky hasn't fallen in yet - does that happen every year? Have you noticed a great reduction in available sky?
