strawberry

thinking of growing some strawberrys this year, seen some bare root A+ runners from mr fothergill, will these fruit the first year? they are more expensive than ordinary runners, or is there a strain that will fruit first year.? cheers brian

 

Dunno, but I doubt you will get much this year unless they are an autumn fruiting variety.

 

They usually do fruit in the first year, but a much smaller crop, though some folk say remove all flowers/fruits in the first year so all its energy goes into building up whole plant , ready fo a much better crop the following year.
You could prove the point by only letting half of them friut this year ?

Mr. F is saying their A+ plants are well grown and only shipped if they are of the required good size, so would expect some decent berries this year.

Well, slowly moving them into new pots and hangers for a show this year.
Hanging pots and these new bags which are supposed to be for spuds.

 

If you have the room to spare I would suggest planting some garlic in between the strawberries. Just take a few cloves and shove them in the ground.
Keeps some bugs and most of the slugs away that would normally decimate your Harvest. And also - free garlic
