At the bottom of my garden, up against the back of someones garage is a patch of land completely shaded by 2 large trees. Its about 3 metres wide by 1 metre and at the moment is a mound of dirt covered in overgrown grass. I'd like to do something useful with it. Any ideas if there are any fruit brushes that would be likely to survive without any direct sunlight? If not then I'm open to suggestions as to what would make it less unsightly :)

What about an architectural 'feature'? Maybe a stone pillar surrounded by shade-tolerant plants?see section in www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profiles0406/shade.asp Or a Zen-garden area:
see www.phototravels.net/kyoto/zen-gardens-index.html - using paving, rocks and pebbles, instead of plants. Tucked away at the end, it could be a 'secret'-garden type thing, especially if obscured by the trees. Pave it and have a seat there? You could make something low-maintenance yet attractive even in a small area. Good luck, Lindy
