    Hi all

Some of my summer raspberry plants are looking quite sorry for themselves :( I wondered if anyone with experience and/or knowledge might know what is causing it. Below are some photos.

Could it be as simple as lack of water? Obviously it has been very hot, and I go for the heavy water once a week approach. Maybe I've not done enough, although in all honesty it's usually the case that I overdo watering!

    Many thanks

      Hi,

Think its lack of water / too hot as both my summer and autumn fruiting ones are looking like yours, some still ok others looking exhausted.

I planted some new 'long cane' ones in the soil this year and one has gone home, but I had several more than I needed so put them in tubs and they have survived and fruited much better as they get and hold all the water more easily than open soil.

Yours could also be in need of a dose of Epson Salts ( magnesium) though mine had a dose a few weeks back.

Will be interesting to hear how others are going on with theirs ....

Im guessing a lack of water and too much direct sunshine.

My patio raspberry has not done well at all this year. In fact it doesn’t look as though it’s grown much at all this year. Good idea @ricky101 about the Epsom salts, I never thought of that and I do have some in the garage :dbgrtmb:

I've only watered mine twice this year and had a fantastic crop so I think drenching once a week is too much. Check if the soil is dry before watering by feeling a few inches down. You are probably washing away the nutrients.

I think growing in compost is your problem, they need to be in the ground in soil.

Needs to be slightly acidic too. Mine get pine needles from neighbours Scots pine and i chuck coffee grounds at them too. Some tomorite and a handful of growmore in spring seems to keep them happy especially the autumn ones.

            Hi

Many thanks for the responses and tips.

OK, so it's looking like the heatwave may be the cause then...

For the record, when do summer raspberries usually come to an end?

The only thing of slight concern I have is that some of the summer raspberry's next year canes have brown dying leaves on. Is that anything to worry about?

            Ta
