Whether you ride a motorcycle, bicycle or drive a car I think it is something we all dread.. It is a cheap nasty alternative that all councils use this method at some time or other and is dangerous in so many ways..
People drive too fast and stones fly = broken windscreens
Too much sun melts the tar and the stone dressing comes off on our tyres which then leaves a smooth surface that in the winter is then a huge danger with ice.. There are hundreds of reasons I know so I won't go on, but instead ask you to sign this instead.. http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/67408

Please share it and get people to sign... Many thanks..

Surface dressing, what's that, we could do with some, as holes with in holes

Yes, that's how I'd describe the people who think it's OK to put that stuff on roads.

so thats what it is called , I thought it cheap and nasty as the stones dont stay that long and its skid city in the winter but I know the stretches off the road that are bad , but it catches lots of people out

I agree this is usually a nasty way of bodging up the roads, but probably because its never done properly.
I remembers seeing this kind of surface years ago, and it stayed put back then.

I'm not sure how they do it now, but then it was always rolled with a road roller, not seen one of them for a long time.

They always seem to do this kind of job on the hottest day of the year also, so the tar never sets, which is why we end up with a nice shiny road surface after about two days and grit everywhere for a year or so.

The re-did a stretch of the road here a little while ago and yes they used a roller, there was no surface stones either, the road is lovely now so sometimes it is done properly.

It depens on where you live, as some councils use differant tar and differants size chippings

The problem is its not the councils that do it, its usually some dead beat bunch of morons that will do the job, for the council, the cheapest.

If they have a bit left over they knock on your door and ask if you want your drive resurfacing.

                  Ah, skimming. Utterly rubbish.

they did that on many roads around here 2 years ago. this week they're doing it again! the bit I REALLY liked was the pile of gravel they left on a fast blind corner. loving geniuses.

They top dress the roads a lot here, what a load of rubbish! The potholes aren't filled in first either. What is left lying on the road is then gradually tossed into mounds by vehicles and once all our cars have finished being damaged by these granite chippings a road sweeper comes along to make a mess of clearing them up.

Surely it can't be cost effective in the long run, they might just as well re-surface properly with tarmac in the first place.

Loofah mentioned skimming...... on the island we know this as something different. It's a very thin layer of tarmac laid as a temporary measure, but that temporary measure never seems to evolve into something more permanent and breaks up or wears through very quickly.

They did the road through the village a few weeks ago and left a tiny pile of chippings in a lay-by surrounded by cones and plastic warning tape, but heaps of the stuff all over the road and they never swept the loose stuff off, just left it to be thrown up by passing vehicles.

I hate it when they use loose dressings with chippings (didn't know it was called surface dressing). I change my route to avoid dressed roads until they have cleared. Not only does it throw up stones to crack windscreen but it must damage all the rustproofing underneath the car. Also the chippings gather in drains and block them up. As others have said the road doesn't seem to be in any way improved in the short or long term . The only benefit will be the councils getting backhanders from the windscreen repair companies
