Thanks Harry.. yes I went yesterday, looked for some red squirrels on the "Squirrel Walk" but didn't see a thing unfortunately.. I think Autumn is the best time to see them, I guess?

We didn't see any on our last visit as well ! I know 6 years ago the squirrel population was seriously effected by a virus . I understand they are recovering now. At one time you could buy nuts from the wardens to feed them , feeding is strictly prohibited now .

Yes, I think coastal managers are realising the best way to deal with everything is let it get on with it, ie, try not to manage it at all. For example they are just letting the coast move now, rather than trying to sustain the dune landscape. So in the future, homes are at risk but they cannot tame the coast so.. The same is true of the red squirrels I suspect.. let them 'get on with it' as they would if they were not managed.

It is a weird and wonderful landscape Stephen and great pictures by the way. :)

Can you tell me what's happening there please, are the dunes taking over the land or receding as is the norm with most coasts now, erosion etc.?

The dunes are moving inland Sheal, weve lost quite a bit of land over the last 100 years.. it's estimated around 4 metres of the Sefton coastline is lost every year. That's astonishing really.

I suspect it won't go too far though.. The dune systems were a lot bigger at one point, before the pine plantations were planted there.

Yep, I've been loads of times. I went there quite a lot as a kid - we'd play in the sand dunes and collect pine cones.

              Lovely photos Steve
