    Hi
This year we have loads of baby fruit on our pear tree.
I think we should be thinning these to enable the tree to produce good quality fruit.
If I'm right, how do I go about it? Remove clusters or thin fruit in the clusters?

    Many thanks

    Dave

    Hi Dave

You dont say how old your tree is ,mine is in its second year and has set fruit for the first time,
We have to go through the "june drop" which happens in "july" when the tree naturally drops a lot of the excess fruits,
Then if it still looks like you have too many take more off,
As my tree is fruiting for the first time i will only have 3 or 4 just for a taste ,as its still getting a good root system going , and it will be with me for many years ,

    Thanks, Pam

The tree is old and well established.

We've only been here for two years, the first we had a huge bumper crop, last year was pretty dismal and this year looks like it will be very good again. I must confess we've done little to it save a bit of pruning after the first year.

We'll wait and see what the "june drop" delivers.

    Dave

Thats interesting, we returned to the U.K. 5 years ago. We were living in Eire for 10 years and we had a small holding, behind the house was a small orchard with very old apple trees , They were quite tasty but we did notice we had a good crop every other year, so your tree could be similar
