I was removing tangled overgrowth and dead wood. A rose bush was also completely overgrown and congested. I snipped off quite a few branches, admittedly one of the reasons was ease of access: trying to get in to cut the dead wood was treacherous what with all the thorns. I ensured the bush was cut properly, making sure to cut to healthy looking buds. But I am a bit worried it might be too early to have done this?

No it's not early Simon, if anything it's a little late. Between Early February and mid March is usually the time. I did mine mid February. :)
