Just seen the French lorry thing on the news. It's awful, but I'm really confused. When I first heard about it, it sounded like the lorry rammed the crowd and then armed police stopped the truck by shooting the driver dead. But tonight they showed amateur video footage of the lead up to the incident. The lorry was driving at normal speed when a motorcyclist tried to break in. So far, still normal speed until two coppers start shooting, at which point the truck accelerates and tragedy follows.

So now I'm confused. It's not black and white anymore. If there was intel on the lorry or the driver, it shouldn't have got that far. If there was no intel, then why did the coppers open fire on the lorry before there was any indication of imminent threat?

Of course. But people will want answers. It is being called a terrorist attack, and while no group has claimed it, the driver has been named with a name that many will immediately associate, rightly or wrongly, with a specific section of society. The finger of blame will be pointed, and retaliation will happen, and violence and hatred will escalate.

It needs to stop. We saw from chillcott that we can't simply accept what we're told without question. The world is rapidly going to hell fuelled by ignorance on all sides.

The BBC shows clear footage of machine gun fire from what must be a helicopter given the trajectory.

That's good news, but I doubt that's the end of it.

Things don't get as far as a military coup without very significant discontent. That discontent won't just go away. In fact as Turkey's economy deteriorates because it's tourist industry virtually collapses because who wants to go to a country that is willing to tear itself apart, the discontent is likely to grow.

I personally feel for those who attempted the coup and failed because they will pay a heavy price. They apparently were doing it to try and re-establish the ideologies of Kamalism and secularism, which were the principles established by Mustafa Kamal Ataturk. Ataturk was the founder of the Republic of Turkey:

"Atatürk then embarked upon a program of political, economic, and cultural reforms, seeking to transform the former Ottoman Empire into a modern and secular nation-state. Under his leadership, thousands of new schools were built, primary education was made free and compulsory, and women were given equal civil and political rights, while the burden of taxation on peasants was reduced."

On the other hand Erdogan is a tyrant who is trying to move Turkey towards Islamism. He is hated by large swathes of society and is grabbing more and more power for himself and imprisoning anybody who stands in his way or dares to insult him or go against him, including many journalists. If he had his way each woman would have at least three babies. He recently said "A woman who rejects motherhood, who refrains from being around the house, however successful her working life is, is deficient, is incomplete."

Who wants that kind of backward thinking idiot ruling their country? Ataturk would be turning in his grave.
