Like many of us, I have had the annual 'itch' since around Christmas, and now I am getting to the point where I am going to have to scratch it!

In past years I have set up shelves by our French doors and have sown and germinated stuff indoors, but its a faff and messy at times, as well as being very restrictive in terms of space in the house. By now I would normally be well underway, but haven't sown a single seed yet.

This year, I want to use the greenhouse from the start - after all, that is what it is for - but is it too early (temperature wise)? I don't mind heating the greenhouse on the odd night if it gets really cold, but don't want to be heating it all the time

I think its a little early . I move my annuals into the GH around the 1st week in April . I keep on eye on the night-time temps , and put a heater on if its likely to fall below 5°c.

I'm planting seeds this year which are sown direct outside into their flowering position (so far nasturtium, Virginian stock, convolvulus major). Do you have any that you could sow direct to give that itch a bit of a scratch?

Not sure @"M" - going to have a right good ratch through my seed box tomorrow (I am at work just now)

I never did get anything in my grow cupboard this winter, so it is likely that it will have residents by tomorrow

I've sown all my seeds in propagators on my windowsills. Always do. I think it's still a little cold for germination out in the greenhouse though.
I have put some of my annuals that are already well on their way, out in the greenhouse though, and they're doing fine so far.

I've got all mine on shelving dotted about the bungalow until they germinate and then I'm trying to find room in the greenhouse once they've germinated and been pricked out.

It is really tempting to do the indoors thing again, but it really is a pain in the house (we don't have that much room in here at the best of times), so I will just have to content myself that it is only really going to be a couple of weeks and I will be in full swing.

@fat controller , I wouldn't want to be a seedling emerging on my windowledge ATM. It's blowin' a raw Easterly and too tough for wee tenderlies I think.
I'm being good and not sowing until this weather has taken a turn for the better. They tell me that things naturally catch up and I don't want that spindly, leaning , leggy nightmare again,

Aye, I must admit the wind had a bit of a nip in this evening, so definitely too early. I have just done a quick paper exercise, and I reckon its another two weeks at least until my very first sowing (barring the grow cupboard of course) and three to four weeks for the bulk of my seeds to start.

Day time temperatures in the greenhouse aren't to bad but overnight will be a killer of seedlings. Mine don't go into the greenhouse until the overnight temperature is a minimum of 7C.

Well, the itch is momentarily scratched, and I feel a bit better for it.

Bought 6 bags of Jack's Magic on Friday afternoon, ready for sowing stuff (been a lazy boy, they are still in the boot of the car!), and of course I just had to come away with the obligatory few packets of seeds :snork:

Today, the grow cupboard has been gutted out (it was hosting jams and chutneys for me), and is now ready for service; the plan is that I am going to plant a few trays of 'test' seeds tomorrow to see what is viable and what isn't (I have quite a few seeds harvested from the garden over the past couple of years, and I don't know what is good to go and what isn't).

Following that, I compiled a couple of lists of my seeds (edibles and flowers) including a few that I ordered today from Premier Seeds via Amazon (couldn't help myself, they were so cheap, and I found them whilst ordering new flower pouches...) - it is quite scary to see how many seeds I have! I have also put 'proposed' week numbers, and week commencing dates for them to be sowed, but as always would appreciate any suggestions to amend those dates.....

EDIT - @"M", I told you it was a big list!

                            Hiya F/C

Just did a quick scan of your list. What stood out was the Capsicums. IMO, they need to be sown now, as they have a long growing season.
